Law Enforcement Officer


Job Summary
The Law Enforcement Officer performs basic sworn law enforcement functions including, but not limited to, arresting and patrolling activities, investigating criminal activity and citizen complaints.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Enforces state laws and university rules.
  • Performs patrol assignments in department vehicle, on bicycle or on foot as assigned.
  • Checks buildings for security, fire and safety hazards.
  • Investigates vehicular crashes, complaints and other incidents.
  • Prepares and submits incident reports, activity reports, and crime reports.
  • Issues parking and uniform traffic citations.
  • Provides emergency medical care (first aid) to sick and injured persons.
  • Functions as an information source for visitors.
  • Controls and monitors traffic flow.
  • Delivers messages related to university business as directed.
  • Assists with inventory of department equipment and property.
  • Apprehends, arrests, and processes criminal violators.
  • Maintains community relations by focusing on information and education.
  • Participates in judicial proceedings as required or directed.
  • Participates in the traffic appeals process as directed.
  • Inspects patrol vehicles for proper fluid levels, tire pressure and serviceability and the operability of emergency equipment (lights, siren, and spotlight).
  • Maintains all issued equipment in a clean and serviceable condition.
  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.


Other Duties
  • Assists with administrative duties such as filing, issuing permits and parking decals, registering bicycles, dispatching of personnel and answering 911 and other telephone lines.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude management from assigning such duties not indicated herein if such duties are logically related to the position.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications
  • Must meet the requirements of chapter 943.13 F.S. and be currently Florida Law Enforcement Certified (have passed the state exam and certification is not inactive due to break in service), or currently enrolled in a Florida Public Service Academy (Police Academy) and will be eligible to take the Florida Law Enforcement exam upon successful completion.
  • Must pass the (PAT) physical abilities timed test.
  • Must be available to work various shifts including day, afternoon, and night hours on a rotational basis in accordance with the school year or as the needs of the University dictates.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Experience in law enforcement within an educational institution or large municipal agency.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of laws, law enforcement principles, rules of evidence and investigative techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skilled in the use of basic first aid and CPR.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to gather and organize legal evidence.
  • Ability to gather data, maintain records, and prepare reports and other written materials.
  • Ability to provide legal depositions and testimony.
  • Ability to respond quickly, calmly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Ability to complete accident and criminal investigations.
  • Ability to provide protection services to individuals on campus.
  • Ability to utilize building security and lock systems.
  • Ability to operate police equipment.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to follow orders, commands and specific instructions and procedures.


**Special Instructions to Applicants**

Eligible candidates will be contacted via email with further details. Qualified candidates will participate in the Physical Abilities Test. Upon completion of the Physical Abilities test, candidates will be scheduled to take a written exam. Candidates must have a passing score of 70% or higher on the written exam to be invited for an interview.

In order to pass, the Physical Abilities test must be completed in 6.04 minutes or less and will include the following:
1. Exiting a vehicle/opening a trunk
2. Running 220 yards
3. Completing an obstacle course
4. Dragging a 150 pound dummy; drag sled

5. Obstacle Course

6. Running 200 Yards
7. Dry firing a weapon six times with each hand; and
8. Placing items in a trunk/entering a vehicle.

Salary: $50,000 to negotiable.

Law Enforcement Officers receive $600 annual uniform allowance and $50/month cell phone allowance.
