The purpose of this position is to assist Parks & Recreation in providing citizens access to quality parks and recreation programs and facilities through maintenance of athletic facilities, parks, green spaces, and boat ramps.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES                               
  • Equipment Maintenance - account for assigned power tools, repair hand tools if necessary, requisition materials to complete assigned tasks, inspect all power tools and equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Park Maintenance - maintain park grounds, clean restrooms, cut grass, trim bushes, plant trees and inspection playground equipment for necessary repairs.
  • Special Projects - perform minor repairs to wood structures, replace and install fences, perform minor masonry work to repair sidewalks, slabs, etc., apply fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides to promote plant growth and remove others.
  • Customer Service - establish contact with citizens requesting information about parks facilities, erect park rules signs, safety related signs and visitor information.

OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIES
All Leon County employees (regular full-time and part-time, OPS, and PRN) are required to work before, during and after a Declared Local State of Emergency (DLSOE). Participation is considered a condition of employment.

DIFFICULTY 

Work is completed based on standard practices associated with landscape maintenance and athletic field maintenance.  Work schedule is issued by supervisor.  Some independent judgment is required to complete special projects.  Work involves deadlines associated with the preparation of park facilities for athletic league contests. Shifts in attention are fairly common due to problems, vandalism, and citizen inquiries.  Limited independent problem solving is required.  Most problem solving is associated with lead worker requirements of this position and unique situations may arise when handling special projects.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
Work is performed outdoors.  Work environmental factors include exposure to inclement weather conditions, dirt, odors, et cetera and exposure to insects and animals. Work requires the following physical demands: standing, walking, lifting in excess of 50 pounds; climbing, crawling, et cetera.  
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of parks maintenance and/or grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of carpentry.
  • Knowledge of masonry.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively through oral and written communications.
  • Ability to operate power tools.
  • Knowledge of reading, writing and arithmetic
  • Skill with hand tools.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects over 50 lbs.
  • Ability to understand technical specifications, manuals, and drawings.
  • Customer service skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a high school diploma or an equivalent and six months of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Necessary Special Requirements:
Must possess or be able to obtain within six months of employment a Limited Chemical Application -Turf and Ornamental Pesticide Applicator's License.
 
Selection Guidelines:
Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check, and drug testing.
 
FLSA STATUS:   Position is non-exempt.  Analysis:  this is manual and semi-skilled work maintaining park grounds and facilities.
