Position Summary:
The Department of Art & Art History at The University of Alabama is seeking a full-time instructor in studio art to teach in the Ceramics area. Primary courses would be all undergraduate levels of ceramics, Ceramics I, Ceramics II, and Advanced Ceramics, but other courses in the area of specialization could be included. This is a one-year, non-tenure track, full-time, renewable position. In addition to teaching ceramics courses and other courses if required, responsibilities include those associated with a ceramics laboratory technician. A terminal Degree in studio art or related field, a record of successful teaching and its assessment, experience teaching relevant courses at the college level, and a demonstrated ability to teach ceramics courses in studio is required.
Required Ceramics Technician Qualifications:
1. Experience loading, firing ceramics kilns, experience mixing clays, glazes, slips and
englobes.
2. Advanced Knowledge of Ceramics, and the related processes.
3. Experience in operating and knowledge in maintaining all related ceramics equipment
in the lab, including but not limited to: kick wheels, electric wheels, grinders, clay
mixer, pug mills, slab rollers, electric kilns, gas kilns.
4. Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets, and the ability to determine hazardous aspects of
related materials; and to safely acquire, work with, store and dispose of these materials.
5. Ability to manage and oversee a safe and inclusive lab/studio environment for a
diverse population of students.
6. Ability to operate forklift, delivery truck or van, and maintain an excellent driving
record.
7. Ability to operate a computer for tasks including: email, material and equipment
research, purchasing and recordkeeping, financial account maintenance.
8. Excellent interpersonal skills.
9. Ability to plan, organize and follow a weekly schedule.
10. Ability to project and respond to needs for equipment and materials for each class.

The Department of Art and Art History offers the BA and MA degrees in Art History and the BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees in Studio Art. Important resources include the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, the Sella-Granata Art Gallery, and the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art, and the UA Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center.
