Director of Lighting, Sound, Projections



The Department of Theatre Arts in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences is seeking a Director of Lighting, Sound, Projections for all theatre productions and events.

The incumbent is responsible for the following: 1. Collaborating with the technical director, design tech faculty, students, and designers in design implementation for departmental productions. 2. Coordination, installation, programming, and operation of all technical elements in sound, lights, and projections for production and events in theatre arts spaces. 3. Attending staff, design/tech area, design, and production meetings as scheduled. 4. Consults with operations, faculty, and technical director to recommend, schedule, and perform inspections of all equipment to ensure OSHA standard compliance. 5. Research and make recommendations to design tech area faculty and staff upgrades that should be made to inventory and theatre spaces for projections, light, and sound equipment. Maintain repertory plots, documentation, and existing sound system. 6. Manage purchasing of necessary equipment and incidentals for individual productions and shop overstock. Maintain tracking of receipts in internal budget system. 7. In coordination with theatrical production director and technical director interview, hire, train, and supervise student workers and departmental over hire. 8. Coordinate with theatrical production director and technical director to evaluate and accommodate internal and external rentals of spaces and equipment. 9. Supervise and mentor student workers, 0880 lab students, and student volunteers during pre-production, technical process, and performances. 10. Coordinate with theatrical production director, technical director, and Dietrich IT to update and make recommendations for all theatre arts computing and software needs in design tech classrooms. 11. Assist with other technical departments as needed. The Dietrich School is committed to building a diverse staff.


Job Summary

Devises effective and creative solutions for the lighting, sound, costume and make-up design, and audiovisual (AV) requirements for all shows and mentors students in correlating duties. Assists in the safe construction, erection, and strike of show scenery. Plans, budgets, purchases, and borrows for production areas and ensures all technical requirements of a show are met. Calculates electrical loads, color theory, and programming and serves as technical liaison for visiting companies and tenants. Assists with budgetary functions and recruiting student employees.


Essential Functions

Coordinate with Technical Director, faculty, and designers in production of shows, including reviewing and budgeting designs for each show, installation of lighting, sound, and projections equipment, space restoration, and maintenance of the equipment within three production spaces through year-round events. Must be able to read ground plans and plots, knowledge of and practical experience with lighting and projection systems.. Experience with computer programs such as AutoCAD, QLab, Vectorworks, and Microsoft 365, and budget tracking software. Must be familiar with OSHA and industry safety standards to execute inspections for general safety and upgrades.


Physical Effort

Lifting light, sound, and projection equipment, lumber, and scenery units weighing between approximately 10lbs. to 50 lbs. unassisted is required; ability to hear and see sound and lighting equipment function; must have good sense of balance and be able to climb ladders. Able to operate in aerial work platforms and on catwalks up to a height of 40 ft.
